How to test a Motorcycle Ignition Coil

Note: This test is applicable only for 3-5 ohms 12V single lead externally grounded ignition system.

Tool required:
– Multi-tester

  1. Remove the ignition coil from motorcycle.
  2. Test the resistance of primary coil:

    – Set ohmmeter to Rx1;
    – Red lead (+) on ignition coil primary wire (the connection to CDI);
    – Black lead (-) on ignition coil ground;
    – normal reading ranges from 3 to 5 ohms,
    – failed if infinity ohms (indicates open circuit or break in coil winding).

  3. Test the resistance of secondary coil:

    – Set ohmmeter to Rx1000;
    – Red lead (+) on ignition coil secondary wire (the connection to spark plug);
    – Black lead (-) on ignition coil ground;
    – normal reading ranges from 2000 to 6000 ohms,
    – failed if zero ohms (or no reading).

Applicable to: Suzuki Raider 150, Shogun 125, Smash Rev, and Motorstar Explorer Z200.
